Before you book
6 questionsDo I need any experience to start?
Zero. The Discovery and Beginner Course are designed for total beginners. If you can swim 50m and aren't terrified of the wind, you're qualified.
Is there an age limit?
Junior Camp is for ages 8–15. Adult lessons are 16+. The oldest student we've taught was 71 — riding upwind by day four.
Do I need to be a strong swimmer?
Comfortable in waist-to-chest deep water is enough for the first few hours. You'll be in a life vest and the bay is shallow far out. Past the body-drag stage you should be able to swim 50m unassisted.
Is there a weight limit?
Not really. We have kites from 7m to 14m to match any rider weight to the day's wind. If you're under 35kg or over 110kg, message us first so we can plan gear accordingly.
How fit do I need to be?
Less than you'd think. Kiting uses your core and legs more than your arms — the harness does the work. If you can walk on the beach and tread water, you're good.
Can I learn if I've never done board sports?
Yes. Wakeboard, surf, or snowboard experience helps in week two — but most students come in with zero board background and still ride upwind in 9 hours.
Conditions & weather
4 questionsWhat if there's no wind on my lesson day?
We reschedule, free. If we can't fit you in before you leave, we refund the unused hours. We won't fake-teach you in 5 knots — that's how schools waste your money.
When is the best time of year to come?
Wind is most reliable November through August, peak season December–April and June–August. September–October is the only slightly quieter stretch. Water is 26°C year-round.
How windy does it get?
Afternoon trade winds average 18–25 knots — textbook learning conditions. Mornings are typically calmer (good for foils and small kites). It rarely blows over 30 knots.
Is the water cold?
26°C / 79°F year-round. Boardshorts and a rash vest is plenty. No wetsuit needed, ever.
During your lesson
5 questionsWhat's actually included in a lesson?
Kite, board, harness, helmet, impact vest, IKO-certified instructor, helmet radio, IKO progress card, and a beachside center to leave your stuff.
How long until I'm actually riding?
Most students stand on the board within 6 hours. Riding upwind (the real milestone) usually happens between hours 9 and 12. Some get it faster, some need a few more — that's normal.
What should I bring?
Swimsuit, rash vest or UV shirt (essential), reef-safe sunscreen, water, and a towel. Sunglasses with a strap if you can't live without them.
How long is each session?
Lessons typically run 2–3 hours per session, scheduled in the afternoon when the wind kicks in (usually starting between 12pm and 2pm).
Can I use my own gear?
Yes, if it's appropriate for the conditions and your level. We'll do a safety check before you go on the water. Otherwise, all our gear is current-generation and well-maintained.
Booking & payment
5 questionsHow do I book?
Online in about 3 minutes — pick your package, choose dates, pay with card or PayPal. Confirmation hits your inbox immediately.
Do I pay a deposit or the full amount?
Full amount at booking secures your spot and instructor. We're a small school — we don't double-book.
What's your cancellation policy?
Free reschedule up to 24 hours before your first lesson. Inside 24 hours, lessons can be moved to credit valid for 12 months. No-shows are non-refundable.
What if I don't end up riding?
You will. But if you genuinely don't make progress because of conditions on our end, we'll make it right — extra hours, credit, or refund. Talk to us.
Do you accept cash?
Online booking is card/PayPal only. Top-ups on the beach can be cash (USD or DOP) if it's easier.
Cabarete & travel
5 questionsHow do I get to Cabarete?
Fly into Puerto Plata (POP) — 20 minutes from Kite Beach. Santiago (STI) is a 90-minute drive, sometimes cheaper. Punta Cana works but it's a 4-hour drive.
Where should I stay?
We can recommend partners from hostel to beachfront villa, mostly walkable to Kite Beach. Email us with your budget and we'll send a shortlist.
Do I need to speak Spanish?
Nope. Our instructors teach in English, Spanish, French, and German. Most of Cabarete's tourist area is English-friendly.
Is Cabarete safe?
Yes — it's a small beach town built around tourism. Standard traveler common sense applies, but it's one of the more relaxed spots in the country.
What else is there to do?
Whale watching in Samaná (Jan–Mar), Paradise Island day trips, Cola de Pato waterfall, horseback rides on the beach, surfing down the coast at Encuentro. We organize all of these — see our Trips page.
Gear & equipment
3 questionsWhat gear do you use?
Current-generation Duotone and Core kites, North and Duotone boards. Replaced every 1–2 seasons. Helmets, harnesses, and impact vests are mandatory on every lesson.
Can I rent gear after I'm certified?
Yes — IKO Level 3 students can rent from us. Hourly, daily, and weekly rates.
Do you sell gear?
We're a school first, but if you're hooked we'll point you to the right local shops (or order direct at better prices than buying back home).
